Abortion in Iowa severely limited

More abortion restrictions in the United States have been adopted in Iowa.  Iowa had a 6 week abortion ban last year.  The abortion ban had been previously blocked by a district judge. A legal challenge to the law banning abortion was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa, Planned Parenthood of North Central States and the Emma Goldman Clinic. Unfortunately for the Iowa women needing abortion services, the block was lifted and the abortion ban went into effect on July 29th 2024.

This was due to the fact that the Iowa Supreme court ruled 4-3, on June of 2024, stating that there is no constitutional right to an abortion in the state of Iowa.

As a result of that decision, women in Iowa cannot get an abortion after cardiac activity is noted on ultrasound. Heart fetal activity is detected at about 5-6 weeks from the last menstrual period.

There are some exceptions to the rule in cases of rape, incest, fetal abnormality or maternal life risks.   This is a huge change from the previously available abortion care up to 20 weeks of pregnancy.
