These four women faced a fetal abnormality that was going to end their child’s life and adversely affect their health too. The current Idaho abortion ban only allows abortion if it is “necessary to prevent the death of the pregnant woman”.
By bringing the law suit they are asking the judge to identify and expand the exceptions to the current Idaho abortion ban that will allow them to have medically necessary abortions for fetal anomalies and potential risks to their mothers.
Dr Corrigan, an Idaho Ob-gyn who had to deal with these emergencies is also a plaintiff. She described the emergency situations that Idaho women face when they are suffering maternal and fetal complications. She testified that the current law is confusing doctors and their colleagues who fear felony charges in providing appropriate abortion care. As a result they delay care to devastating results for the pregnant women and their families.
