You missed your period and tested positive for pregnancy at home. Now what? Call our office for a confirmation test. We have options: A repeat urine test, a blood test, and an ultrasound.
B.
Most pregnancies are located in the lining of the uterus. Rarely, a pregnancy can be abnormally located outside the uterus and is called an ECTOPIC pregnancy. This situation can happen when a woman has previously had a pelvic infection, an abdominal surgery, or a condition called endometriosis. To make sure we are not dealing with an ectopic pregnancy, we may need to do a pelvic ultrasound along with blood tests. Sometimes, we may need to check the pelvic ultrasound and blood tests a few times a week to confirm the diagnosis.
This is a CRITICAL step. An ectopic pregnancy is a dangerous condition that can cause internal hemorrhage and death if not discovered immediately. Time is of the essence. Especially if you have spotting and abdominal pain.
Signs of an ectopic pregnancy are spotting, pain on one side of the lower abdomen, pain with coughing, sneezing, or moving. These are signs that the pregnancy in the fallopian tube is growing and causing pressure and pain. This is dangerous, and it needs to be diagnosed and treated immediately. Otherwise, the fallopian tube will burst, causing internal hemorrhage. Ectopic pregnancy needs treatment at the hospital. A surgery may be needed to remove it or to stop the internal bleeding.
