Pregnant and Undecided
A.
You were using contraception, and you thought you were protected. Your period failed to come on time and a home pregnancy test is positive. Now what?
B.
Both you and your partner need to know what is going on, so you can figure out your options. Your partner may doubt your pregnancy and needs additional confirmation.
C.
In the office, we will check the status of the pregnancy by doing an ultrasound. We will make sure that the pregnancy is normal and will tell you how far along you are. We will give you the estimated time of delivery. We will discuss your medical history and how this pregnancy will affect your medical conditions. At this point, you may decide to wait until you figure out what to do.
D.
If you decide to continue with the pregnancy and have a baby, then we will refer you to an OB who will follow you and deliver your baby.
If you decide to terminate the pregnancy, we can do it at a later time, when you have time to process the news and consider your options.
E.
It is ok to be conflicted and change your mind. This happens often! It is normal. It also happens when an ultrasound discovers a twin pregnancy. This adds an element of surprise but also wonder to the situation. It’s natural to want to discuss it with your partner and family before making a final decision!
