How does the abortion pill work?

How do I know the pill worked?

Medication Αbortion

The process is also called the abortion pill, RU 486, medical abortion.

This process uses 2 medications to miscarry an early pregnancy.

The medications are Mifeprex and Misoprostol.

Mifeprex is a progesterone blocker which prevents the pregnancy from growing. Progesterone is like the electricity that runs the pregnancy growth.  By blocking the progesterone with the Mifeprex, the pregnancy can no longer grow. This happens over 95 percent of the time.

The Misoprostol causes the uterus to cramp to miscarry the pregnancy.

Together both pills are effective in completing the abortion process.

The process is like a strong heavy period.  There will be clots, bleeding and cramping.

Most pregnancies miscarry within 48 hours from taking the pills.

Within a week from taking the pills, over 95 percent of pregnancies have miscarried.

Rarely, for unclear reasons, the pregnancy continues and additional treatments are necessary.  These treatments include more pills or surgery to evacuate the uterus.

In our office, we offer an ultrasound to be sure we know how far along you are. A repeat ultrasound is done after a week to make sure that the pregnancy has successfully miscarried.

We will then discuss contraception to prevent a similar event from happening again.

Under optimal medical supervision, proper pregnancy diagnosis and follow up, the process is safe.

In our office, we offer all steps of evaluation to increase the success and decrease the risks of the process.
